Crochet Books and Baby Clothes from Granny
There was a time when every announcement of a baby coming into the family sent the granny-to-be rushing for her knitting needles and crochet hooks. The rush to find crochet books and baby clothes ready for the newborn's layette was something that most mothers-to-be were well familiar with. These days the practice isn't so well-known. With both the pregnant woman and the grannies-to-be still working in today's culture, there just isn't the time for creating little items of baby clothes handcrafted with love.
Also with the mass production techniques available today, baby clothes are so much cheaper to buy. Yarn on the other hand is very expensive, as are the finishing touches such as ribbons, and whereas handmade items such as crocheted a baby clothes christmas dress look fabulous, they're expensive to make.
Hand-Made with Love
Although you can save money and time buying baby clothes in the stores, but you can't buy the love with which these tiny clothes are made. With each pattern in each book followed, with each yarn chosen, and with each stitch made, baby clothes are a labor of love. This is time spent not only creating clothing for your baby but also thinking about the new baby.
Our firstborn was premature and needed life-saving surgery. Whilst my husband and I spent hours at our tiny baby's bedside, my mother crocheted the tiniest little jackets and hats you imaginable. Over the first month we acquired a few sets of preemie clothes but with the exception of the set we proudly took our baby home from the hospital in, the only premature clothes we didn't pass onto the premature baby unit were the ones hand crocheted by our baby's Grandma - because those were the ones hand-made with love.
